The month of September has always been a pretty solid reliable time for salmon fishing, there’s a good collective of fish in the whole system that have been running since the spring, the weather and water temperatures are dropping, and the fish are becoming more aggressive as it gets closer to spawning time. This September was a bit different, we had one unusual week where the fish were totally off, they were there in crazy numbers, but just didn’t want to know, but this was just a phase, and myself and guests finished strong for the month, heres how we faired.
September 3rd
When you introduce someone to the joys of fly fishing for the first time and they absolutely smash it. Huge congratulations to Caroline on her first fly caught fish, this lovely salmon, caught in really tough water conditions. Her husband @johnbresnihan also chipped in with his largest sea trout to date, making it the perfect day for us all and a great team effort
September 10th
Here’s Keith with today’s prizes, and very hard-earned, especially after a really tough day for us yesterday, it was great to see him connect with something, his third and fourth fish with me this season, and my 40th guided fish of the year. As always I decided it was best to fish a dropper in the not so perfect conditions, it couldn’t have worked out any better, with both fish falling to a size 14 @fulling_mill mirage stoat on the dropper!
September 12th First salmon smiles
Well, that’s an epic end to a great 2 days with the boys, great effort by each and every one of them fishing in tough conditions. Two of the boys managed to break their salmon virginity, which included this colossal hen fish for John that gave him an incredible fight, and a smaller grilse for Simon, great effort again lads, see you boys next year.
September 13th Barry strikes a silver hat trick
What an incredible day my good friend and today’s guest @bjwfishing had, smashing in a Tyne treble, 3 stunning salmon from 3 hookups, including fish of 14, 10, and 4 lb. Barry has an incredible catch ratio with myself totaling 16 fish in 11 visits, and this is not luck, he fishes his heart out, often missing lunch, and most of all, we work as a great team.
September 24th 50th guided fish!!!
After a tough day yesterday, it was great to finally show my good friends and guests Paul and Helen what the river Tyne is all about! They absolutely smashed today managing 2 salmon apiece, including Helens first ever salmon, and Paul’s first Atlantic salmon. It was also a fitting way to hit my 50th guided fishing of the season, and with a month left and some incredibly talented anglers, who knows what’s possible…
September 26/27th
This weekend I welcomed previous guests Aaron and James back, this would be their third trip with me, and were desperate to keep their 100 percent record intact. What a perfect weekend it turned out to be, as James only went and bagged his first ever salmon, and Aaron landed his first fly caught fish, making it a first each for the boys over the 2 days.
September 28th Phil hits 4 in 4 days!
Here’s today’s guest and great friend @phil_pallister with his biggest fly caught salmon to date, making it 4 fish in 4 days with me this season, the man is unstoppable. Killer fly today was a @fulling_mill red Stokoe shrimp
I managed to get out more than the previous months this month, but typically the week i designated to fish myself, the fish were totally off, but i did manage to wangle a couple of nice salmon out, one falling to a size 12 mirage stoat on the dropper in big water, and the other to a Stokoe shrimp Tube.
