TYNE SALMON GUIDING

Salmon and Sea trout guided fishing days

After fishing the Tyne for salmon and sea trout over 25 years and watching it grow from strength to strength and come to understand this river I’m pleased to announce that I am now offering guided salmon/sea trout fishing and Spey casting tuition on 4 phenomenal stretches of the mighty river Tyne.  Due to the popularity and mass demand of salmon fishing in Northumberland i have enlisted the help of 2 very experienced river Tyne independent guides Andrew Jackson and Robert Keeney.  Please note that the guide will be specified on the day of purchase due to how busy the season is.  I am also pleased to now offer guided evening and night time sea trout fishing in the summer months.  Salmon often take the limelight on this river, but the sea trout fishing can be spectacular, producing multiple double figure fish each year both in daylight and night time.

What the day consists of

The day starts off with an 8.30 am meet at the chosen destination with guide, after a quick introduction, a bit of banter, and tackle up we are ready to fish for about 9 am.  There are no restrictions on lunchtime like other beats, we usually stop for maybe 30 minutes around 1.30 pm for a bite to eat, then straight back to fishing.  I usually round things up between 5/5.30pm, making sure we’ve fished all the pools good and hard, there is often an option to fish on once I leave.  Please note that no previous experience is needed, and full fly fishing tuition is given throughout the day.  Spinning for salmon is also allowed and is down to the choice of the angler what they would prefer to do.

During the day you will not only learn about the watercraft and knowledge required to catch these fish, but also put into practice the numerous casts needed to cover the water and present the fly to this incredible species.  Most importantly it’ll be a busy fun-filled day with hopefully a silver prize included.

For our evening/night time sea trout fishing we start around 7pm and fish right through into dark finishing between 12 and 1AM.

Please note that I run on a catch and release basis only, we are trying to help this incredible species survive and increase in numbers while enjoying the chase and sport, every single fish we return back to finish its amazing journey helps secure the future of this fish and beloved past time.

Warden fishing offers anglers 4 stunning beats of between 1000 and 1700 meters covering both the North and South Tyne rivers with an average of  7 named pools per beat and numerous hidden runs which consist of both single and double bank access for fly and spinning.  There is also a club that fishes the water along with our day rods, but the best etiquette is always put into practice.

2022 saw 28333 fish recorded through the riding mill fish pass on the Main Tyne, and even with bad conditions produced a good year for the Warden stretches totalling 304 migratory fish being caught (166 salmon and 148 sea trout).

Prices vary throughout the year and increase as the months go on with the fishing really starting to get going from May onwards, although salmon can be caught as early as April, but the numbers are limited due to being midway upstream on the river system.

Other Tyne beats

Along with the warden stretches I’ve fished on all my life and successfully guided on over the last few years (please check my blog) I also offer guiding on the incredible Dilston beat on the main tyne, ive also fished this water for most my life.  Dilston gives an angler a great chance of a spring fish from March onwards, and with 6 rods available is can accommodate parties.  Both in low and high water there are always options on this stretch to fish and due to the beat being on the main Tyne it sees a huge number of fish throughout the whole season.  Dilston offers great sea trout fishing due to the characteristics of the pools and runs, especially at night time.  Another very productive stretch I also guide on is the stunning Lambley stretch situated high up on the south tyne that later in the season gets rammed with fish and can often save the day when the rest of the river system is in flood.

Accommodation

With Hexham being minutes away from the fishing, and being a busy town with everything you need, it makes the perfect place to stay.  I have access to numerous levels of accommodation depending on what is required, from beautiful 4 star hotels and cottages right on the river bank, to self accommodation style apartments in the centre of Hexham.
