DON JOAQUIN RIVER LODGE – Argentina
Don Joaquín River Lodge is located in Esquina lying on the banks of the Corriente River. As it meets the Paraná River, a delta is formed, giving raise to one of the best setting’s for Golden Dorado Fly Fishing.
The scenery offered by Esquina, with a vast native flora and fauna, attracts many tourists throughout the year. Its rivers, delta and vegetation make up the ideal place for some of the best Fly Fishing in Argentina. The 2 rivers provide a great diversity of fishing, from narrow fast flowing clear runs and pools, to vast open spaces full of snags and structure that the golden dorado love.
Golden Dorado is the number one targeted species here, they reside in the river in huge numbers growing up to around 30lb. Fly fishing is the most popular method used for these fish, intermediate tips and lines are very popular but sometimes nothing can beat the explosive take on a surface lure. Pacu can also be caught on the fly at the right time of the year as well as piranha. Live baiting is also very popular which opens up the opportunity for other species like, Pira Pita and Surubi, as well as many other species.
Golden dorado are so acrobatic, when hooked they always like to put on a show often cartwheeling across the surface like an acrobat. They can be fished for and caught all year round, the more consistent and best weather being very popular between August and December. The stunning surubi catfish can also be targeted all season long, although these can be caught on fly, live bait is the most productive method to seduce these super hard fighting fish. Pacu are an incredibly hard fighting fish and can be caught mainly between December to March. The most amazing thing about this species is they are very closely related to the piranha, the difference being they have human looking teeth and predominantly feed on falling fruit.
ACCOMMODATION + DINING
The Fishery has 2 properties with the main lodge sitting right on the banks of the Corriente river with super easy access for your mornings fishing. The lodge can accommodate 16 anglers with 8 en-suite bedrooms, all fully air- conditioned and with private bathrooms. The dining and living room area is spectacular, with multiple fresh produce for breakfast and some show stopping traditional asado’s (BBQ’s) for dinner, this gourmet cuisine is something they are very proud of.
